Voice control is for the quick things. Ask for the lights on when you pull into the driveway, off when you head to bed, or a different color when the mood changes. A short request to turn them on, off or to a new color does the job. In December, that makes them Alexa Christmas lights you never have to plug in or untangle.
Outdoor lights are a natural fit for voice because you usually want them while your hands are busy: carrying groceries in from the car, getting kids out the door, or answering the door to guests. You do not need to find your phone and open an app for a simple on or off.

Voice control works alongside the automation. The things that happen every night belong in a timer, and the holidays belong in Autopilot. Your voice is for the exceptions: an early night, a late dinner on the patio, a surprise birthday.
That split keeps the lights predictable. They come on at sunset whether anyone is home or not, and anyone in the house can still change them in the moment without learning the app.

Better Connections on Hub2
The Hub2 controller brought a reworked Alexa and Google Home integration, with improved connections and commands. Hub2 also connects over dual-band WiFi or Ethernet, for a faster and more reliable link to your network.
Voice assistants depend on your home internet. If it drops, the schedule carries on: sunrise and sunset timers keep running offline, and one phone at a time can still control Hub2 over Bluetooth from within about 15 feet of the control box.

Smart Home Integration FAQs
Yes. Gemstone Lights work with Amazon Alexa and with Google Home, so you can control your outdoor lights by voice. The integration was improved with the Hub2 controller.
Voice is best for turning the lights on and off and changing the color. Detailed work such as building patterns, setting zones and creating timers happens in the Gemstone Lights app.
Your Gemstone Lights system needs to be on WiFi, with the Gemstone Lights app and the Alexa or Google Home app on your phone. The homegroup owner in the Gemstone Lights app links the account, and after that Alexa or Google Home on a smart speaker, display or phone can run the lights.
Alexa and Google Home need the system on WiFi, so voice control waits until the connection is back. The lights keep their schedule because sunrise and sunset timers run offline, and one phone at a time can still control Hub2 over Bluetooth from within about 15 feet of the control box.
Gemstone names Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice control, and Control4 and ELAN for whole-home systems. Siri and Apple HomeKit are not on that list. On an iPhone, the Gemstone Lights app gives you full control, and you can use Alexa or Google Home for voice.
